Facebook has announced about a new software named as "Facebook Home" which is going to be available for download on 12th April  from Google play store .Facebook Home makes the social network the hub of any smartphone running Google's Android operating system and aimed to make its the hub of people's mobile experiences.

The purpose of launching this software is to bring Facebook content right to the home screen, rather than requiring users to check apps. This app replaces Android’s standard interface with its own  home screen and lock screen, allowing people to make handsets they already own into Facebook-centric phones.

Home is a completely new experience that lets you see the world through people, not apps. Its new family of apps will let users display mobile versions of their news feed and messages prominently on the home screens of a wide range of devices based on Google's Android operating system..It is the part of Facebook's move to shift its users' focus from "apps and tasks" to people.

After downloading the software, instead of seeing a set of apps for email, maps and other services on the screen, users will be greeted with photos and updates from their Facebook feeds.

Servo, a New Web Browser/ News on New Web Browser "Servo"

Samsung and Mozilla have come up together  to build a new web browser called "Servo",  that will take better advantage of ARM architecture,multicore processors on the phones, leading to better HTML5 apps and browsing itself.

The new browser will be called, Servo and will be written in Rust, a relatively new programming language that is being developed by Mozilla. Rust is Mozilla's new programming language. This language in itself is in early stages of development. Its version 0.6 was also released on Wednesday.. Together, Mozilla and Samsung are bringing both Rust and Servo to Android and the ARM architecture.

Mozilla's Chief Technical Officer, Brendan Eichneed 

 Noted that both the companies feel the need "to be prepared to take advantage of tomorrow's faster, multi-core, heterogeneous computing architectures. That's why we've recently begun collaborating with Samsung on an advanced technology Web browser engine called Servo."He added that the browser based on Servo will run "on modern hardware."

This means addressing the causes of security vulnerabilities while designing a platform that can fully utilise the performance of tomorrow's massively parallel hardware to enable new and richer experiences on the Web," he further said on the post.

Current browsers are not optimised to use multi core processors and therefore can't take advantage of advanced hardware that is available in today's smartphones and tablets. This browser is all the more important as people are talking about HTML5 based web applications getting the same ability as native apps (that you download on your phone or is already present). And for that to happen, you need to take full advantage of the hardware of the phone which this new browser will bring.

Firefox  as launched its updated version 20 which is enhanced with private browsing, new download manager. Firefox 20 is available  for Windows, Mac and Linux, and mobile browser for Android.

The new version offers a better implementation of web browsing in Private mode as it allows users to open a new private browsing window without closing or changing their current browsing session. This essentially means that users can open a separate window for private browsing, while the other windows remain unaffected and continue to record browsing history. The feature has even been extended to the Android version of the browser allowing users to open a private tab. The feature also enables users to check multiple email accounts of one service provider simultaneously.

The new Firefox release also comes with a new download manager in the Firefox toolbar, allowing users to monitor, view and locate downloaded files without the need to switch to another window. The download manager is similar to the one offered by the Safari web browser.

In addition to the above features, Firefox for Android adds support for additional devices running on a less powerful processor architecture, ARMv6 processors. This means that phones  like Samsung Galaxy Next, HTC Aria, HTC Legend, Samsung Dart, Samsung Galaxy Pop and the Samsung Galaxy Q will be able to run Firefox for Android. So the browser extends support to 50 million more phones, according to Mozilla.

The release also brings features for developers For developers including getUserMedia, a part of the WebRTC specification that allows developers to quickly and easily write code that accesses the user's camera or microphones. The new version also includes a developer toolbox that offers quick access to developer tools in one window and gives developers easy-to-remember ways to switch between tools. It also offers Canvas Blend Modes that allows developers to define how they want the Canvas to draw over an existing image to create different visual effects.

Google doodle pays tribute to Maria Sibylla Merian on her 366th Birthday

Google's latest doodle celebrates the anniversary of the birth of of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), a German who was one of the greatest artist-naturalists of her time and who is regarded as having been a significant influence in the development of entomology.
 
Born on April 2 1647 in Germany, Maria dedicated her life to the study and depiction of the metamorphosis of insects. She studied plants and insects and made elaborated paintings about them. Her detailed observations and documentation of the metamorphosis of the butterfly laid the foundation for modern entomology.

 The Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (The Metamorphoses of the Insects of Suriname) which depicted the life cycles of insects she had studied. It was published in 1705, 10 years before she suffered a stroke and was partially paralysed. She died two years later. Her daughter published a collection of her work.
